Meet the Author Series

Sad Follow-Up to a Prior Snell Author Talk

Those who follow Snell Library’sMeet the Author Seriesmay remember authorJohn Hollway’s discussion of his book,Killing Time, the story of an innocent man’s 14 years on death row and how he came to be found innocent and released. At the time of the talk, the Supreme Court was due to hear a civil case brought by the innocent man, John Thompson, and his attorneys against the New Orleans prosecutor’s office that was found to have withheld evidence in the original case, evidence that would have led to his acquittal but whose suppression meant he lost all those years of his life to unjust prison time. A local jury awarded him $14 million to compensate for the time he spent on death row, and appeals courts upheld the award, all the way to the Supreme Court. A sad update this week, however, as the Supreme Court handed down its 5-4 decisionoverturningthe monetary award, stating the prosecutor’s office could not be held responsible for the “bad actions” of a single person, even though it has been shown that the office had a clear pattern of violations of the rules for handling evidence and was obviously not training its prosecutors in correct procedures — and even though all the lower appeals courts had upheld the local decision that the prosecutor’s officewasresponsible. Commentators around the news media are outraged by the decision; for examples, seethis New York Times op-edorthis piece in Slate.com. According to theFacebook page for the book(which by the way offers more links to additional media coverage of the decision, as well as to the text of the decision itself), “Now the only remedy that any of us has for prosecutorial misconduct is a complaint to the State Bar Association — which, in most states, you can only make if you are admitted to the Bar yourself.” This is a grim outcome for all of us, not just John Thompson.

Northeastern Meets Micah Nathan

Yesterday was the first Meet the Author Talk of the semester, and it was awesome!Losing Graceland’s弥迦书内森给了一个很好的阅读和candidly answered all of our inquiring questions about the novel, his personal life, and his writing processes. The audience was pleasantly surprised when we were treated to more than a few amusing anecdotes from his life. Frankly, he should try comedy on the side. You can read more aboutLosing GracelandonAmazonor on hiswebsitewhere Micah says Northeastern“rivaled any bookstore/assembly/book expo I’ve ever attended.”And he wants to use our poster design as a potential new book cover!“…a graphic design major put together the poster. If fate deems the book goes into a second printing, I will lobby for this being the cover. Or at leastacover for some version. How is it she managed to combine the Elvis vibe with my narrow head?”I know I’m looking forward to the next event, and I hope to see everyone there!

Parents Weekend Author Talk Coming Up

To some, Parents’ Weekend is a drag… back to that restricted “my-parents-are-watching” mentality. To others, it’s a relief to have some quality family time again, to take away some of the homesickness. Regardless of if you’re happy about it or not, parents are coming in force this weekend and Northeastern has set up some awesome events, like Howie Mandel, to keep you entertained. If your folks can’t make it, you are in luck because you can still enjoy everything Northeastern has to offer this weekend! Snell Library will continue a Parents’ Weekend tradition on Saturday at 11am with another talk from our Meet The Author series. Northeastern ProfessorRoger Abramstalks about his bookSports Justiceand how the law interacts with the business of professional sports. I for sure will not be missing this one, it should be a pretty active discussion. Check out theFacebook page for more info.
